Don't Hire Blind: 7 Questions To Ask Your Wedding Videographer Before You Book.

I get it. You’ve already made dozens of decisions throughout your wedding planning process. And now, you’re sick of it. You want decisions to come quick and easy. But when it comes to your wedding videographer, trust me, you need to take your time!

Don’t hire the first wedding videographer you stumble across. You’re stuck with them the whole day! And if you didn’t take the time to get to know them, their style, and their process, you might find out you aren’t a great fit the day of your wedding. That’s the last thing we want.

So slow down. Enjoy the research. If you don’t know where to start, here are seven questions you should ask your wedding videographer before you book with them.

1.What is included in the final deliverable?

At the end of the day, you’re hiring a videographer because of their product. Ask them what you’re paying for. If capturing most of the day is important to you, ask how long your wedding film will be. If you really want to listen to the speech's years from now, ask if they’re included in the package. If you want to relive your ceremony every anniversary, ask if it comes as its own video!

Before you reach out, know what you want. And once you do, find someone who gives you everything you’re looking for.

Every package includes an edited wedding film, a full ceremony recording, and complete speech recordings so you can relive every moment long after the day is over.

2.How would you describe your wedding film style?

This might be one of the most important questions you can ask. Think about what you like in movies, in content, in short films. How do you want to remember your big day? What fits your vibe? You want to find a wedding videographer that shoots in the style you’re envisioning.

New Morning Media's Take

I capture documentary style wedding films. My goal is to record your day as it unfolds. The real moments, genuine emotions, and little in-between memories you'll cherish forever.

3.How do you capture audio for my wedding film?

Not all wedding videographers include audio, and some only have it as an add on. If audio is crucial to you, make sure you ask!

It’s also key to know how your videographers record said audio. Do they use microphones? If not, how do they ensure the audio is clear? If so, is it a hidden mic? You don’t want to see a big black dot in every clip.

This question may seem like a miniscule detail, but it can truly make or break your wedding video in so many ways.

I use discreet wireless mics to capture clear, high-quality audio. During the ceremony I mic the officiant. During the private vows (if applicable) I mic the groom. This keeps everything sounding great without adding distractions to your photos.

4.How many hours are included in my wedding package?

Most of the time, this depends on what package you choose. A typical range is 6 hours, 8 hours, or a full wedding day. Knowing which to choose is completely personal and dependent on which parts of your day you want documented.

Another good thing to note is when your time starts. Is it right when the videographer shows up? Is it at the specified time even if they’re there early? Is it when the dance starts even if that’s before the contracted end time?

Get your expectations crystal clear so nothing surprises you on your big day!

New Morning Media's Take

I offer three wedding packages:

  • 6 hours

  • 8 hours

  • 10 hours

So, whether you're planning an intimate celebration or an all-day event, there's an option that fits your vision.

5.What is the turnaround time for my wedding film?

Okay, as a wedding videographer, this one can sometimes be a hard question to answer. Everything is dependent on when in the season your wedding took place, how busy your videographer was before you, and which package you’re looking into.

A typical timeline is anywhere from two to six months. I know you’re excited. I know you want to see that video literally the next day. Just remember, your wedding videographer wants to deliver a quality video, not just a fast one.

New Morning Media's Take

I know you'll be excited to relive your wedding day, so I always work to deliver your film as quickly as possible. While turnaround can vary depending on the season, most couples receive their finished wedding film within 6–8 weeks.

6.How do you work with my wedding photographer?

These two vendors spend the most time with you on your wedding day. They should not only get along well with you, but also with each other. If your wedding videographer and photographer are constantly fighting for control of the day, you may run into issues.

Ask them if they’ve worked with your photographer before, if you’ve booked them already. Ask them what their style of direction is. Ask them if they plan on taking the lead or following the photographers.

There’s really no wrong answer here, but you want to make sure that your photographer and videographer are on the same page.

New Morning Media's Take

I love working alongside photographers and always make it a priority to support them. Since I have a bit more flexibility in how and where I capture footage, I tend to let the photographer take the lead. That way, we're both documenting your day without getting in each other's way.

7.What is your process in an emergency and/or cancellation?

The last thing you want at 7:00 am the morning of your wedding is a text from your videographer saying they’ve come down with fever and won’t be making it. Now, your wedding videographer is human, so something like this may very well happen. That’s why you need to know how they’ll handle this situation before you book with them.

Do they find a replacement for you? Do you get a full refund? How do they help you figure out the situation?

Knowing that your wedding videographer will stay calm and handle any emergency that comes their way gives you peace of mind on your big day.

New Morning Media's Take

In the unlikely event that I can't be there, I have a trusted network of experienced wedding videographers I can call on. They'll capture your day, and I'll personally edit your film, so it reflects the style and storytelling you hired me for.

Besides your spouse, your wedding videographer and photographer spend the most time with you on your big day. You want to look for someone you trust, someone who answers your questions, and someone you genuinely enjoy as a person.

So, ask the big questions. Don’t avoid hard topics. I promise it’s worth it!
